A modus operandi of mine, that is, the printing technique I employ to create my images, is called oil printing and it isn't something I personally invented. True, this process is quite old: its origins go back to 19th century. For me as an artist, to adopt this expressive method was a fully conscious move, made after four years of shooting digital photography and another four years of shooting various types of film stuff. I believe that modern photographic industry suffers a lot from overloading with sophisticated technical tools and instruments. When one asks himself "What camera should I buy?" before another, way more important question "What do I want to take picture of?", society has an aestetic issue. To me, this is a sign of the death of photography as an artistic phenomena.

So, as a reaction to the overwhelming "technologism", I chose to create my works by hand. This often results in a print which is impossible to reproduce even for the author himself. I call this substantial non-reproduceability of the work of art a singularity.

Greetings, children!

Indeed, I sometimes realize that I keep forgetting to upload
my new works here. Actually, I keep forgetting to upload them
anywhere else as well. My understanding of Photograph is
undergoing critical changes over the last year. I wish I had time
to lay them out in a written form. In short, I am more and more
disposed to think that the Protograph is a material object, meaning,
something that one can touch and hold in hands. This definition
basically makes the digital image a non-Photography. So uploading
such image and sharing it has value which is close to zero.

I must confess, such heretic thoughts might have come
out of darkroom, where I spend quite a lot of time every week.
But please, don't take this as purist's preaching, for I am not
a purist. Yet. Anyways, I strive to create a Photograph that is
unique piece of art. Sounds like a maximalism? Well, maybe it is a
maximalism. I also might sound as one who deliberately narrows
the circle of people who can observe the result of my work
and give me a proper feedback, which is also might be true. I hope
that that feedback will be more relevant and useful for me as an artist.

That been said, I will 'probably' post here very sporadically. I've really
raised my own bar of quality very high.

#medium-large

Journal Entry: Mon Sep 27, 2010, 3:15 PM

Greetings!

There are good DA groups, there are bad DA groups. I've seen a lot good and bad. But there is one that really stands out: #medium-large. If you shoot medium or large format stuff, like I do, this is probably the first place you'd probably want to contribute to, right? I naively thought so too.
It appeared that to submit your art to this group you have to be REALLY lucky. It's really funny how the management tries to avoid any responsibility for voting against the deviations that just meant to be exposed in the group's gallery. When your works gets rejected (normally with no explanation) and you try to figure out why, you'll probably get the answers like "Don't blame me, it wasn't solely my decision", "My vote wasn't decisive tie-breaker, the majority was against your work".
It's even more funny to get a response like this "Dude, I don't get your idea. I think your composition is really bad. And don't forget to clean up the dust when scanning your negatives". It's ok to clean the negatives, I totally agree, but the judgment of the composition should be left a separate thing. Anyways, when I humbly explained my idea and composition to the management guy, his/her response was like: "Hm, now your deviation makes much more sense...". How much time you think this person spent deciding whether to approve or to reject? Five seconds?

I now say the obvious thing, but still: being a group's admin is a heavy duty responsibility. That's why I personally has quit from several group's management.

PS. Please note that #medium-large' policy forbids re-submitting the works, so once rejected, they are kinda condemned forever! Sweeet!

Greetings.

Please treat this a call to all truly creative DA members.

It's nice to be critical to works of others, but what's more important is that as an artist, I have to be even more critical to what I personally do. I'm here on DA for five years almost, my collection has more than four hundred of pictures, but you know what? Now I'm pretty positive that they are nothing but a trash. Tonight I thoroughly reviewed my entire gallery and deleted more than 100( yes, one hundred! ) of deviations that I can't be proud with.  I would definitely delete even more, but DA doesn't seem to have 'batch delete' feature, he he. Strangely, some of those deleted works had quite significant amount of fav's. Seems that people like the works that I dislike... Anyways...

Let me encourage you to do the same thing. It's a nice exercise of self-criticism and, eventually, an effort to make DA freer of low quality art.

Happy Halloween + some trip plans

Sat Oct 31, 2009, 11:05 AM

Folks,

Happy Halloween! I'm back to Kiev, but not for a long time. I'm going to visit Venice, Italy 4.11 - 12.11. By the way, Ukraine has announced H1/N1 flu epidemic state. Everybody on the streets wears medical masks. This Halloween promises to be REALLY creepy!

Cheers,
S.
